I get bored of using the same old products day after day, so I’m always on the look out for new hair styling items.
Whilst browsing the isles of boots a couple of weeks ago I came across a brand I hadn’t heard of before “Johnny’s Chop Shop Barbers” I was instantly pulled in by their 1950’s barber shop packaging and whimsical product names.
I decided I was so chuffed by the attention to detail that had gone into the packaging I would take the risk of purchasing some of the range without any background knowledge of the brand. *p.s – its 3 for 2 on haircare at boots at the moment.
Turns out Johnny’s Chop Shop is a barbers shop build within TopMans flag ship store in London. Looking at their instagram page is looks pretty cool and snazzy, I probably wouldn’t be cool enough to attend myself.
Alas, I picked up three items from the range and have been using them everyday for the past two weeks, now is time to give you my verdict:
I don’t often go for clays anymore, waxes and pomades are more my thaaang. But I have stacks and stacks which is why I decided on the clay. To my surprise ‘wild cat’ has a very different texture compared to clays I’ve used in the past. Its almost a hybrid between a fiber and a clay, which makes it a lot more malleable to style through.
A great clay to create a choppy style with hold and definition, with a matt finish. Best for short/medium length hair like myself.
It’s a clay with a difference, not only does it do its main job of styling your locks but it has a second job of caring and protecting with a little help from some good old Beeswax and Sage Leaf Extract, with stimulating Black Pepper. Oh and its also Paraben free. Yay.
This clay get a big thumbs up from me on all of the following: Price, Packaging, Texture, Scent, Finish.
How to use it:
With one finger, scoop a 5 pence sized amount. Rub through palms until evenly spread. Rough your hands through damp or dry hair to shape.
Aqua (Water), Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Quartz, Kaolinite, Petrolatum, Cetearyl Alcohol, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Glyceryl Stearate, Parfum (Fragrance), Cera Alba (Beeswax), Dimethicone, Ammonium Polyacrylate, C13- C16 Isoparaffin, Laureth-30, PEG-100 Stearate, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol, Piper Nigrum (Black Pepper) Seed Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, CI 19140 (Yellow 5), CI 16035 (Red 40), CI 42090 (Blue 1).
A grooming cream is a must have in my opinion. Brilliant for a top up of style throughout the day, or to tame them ‘fly away’ strands of hair.
This could quite possibly be my favourite from the range.
Its a more water based cream to what I am used to which can mean I dispense a little more than necessary but other than that no complaints. Pleasant scent much like the other products from the range.
Used alone creates a easy/flexible hold with a healthy satin shine finish. On top of the clay creates a more defined slick look helping to tame any loose strand having a party on their own.
Perfect for those with medium to short hair styles who are looking for a little extra Elvis vibe.
Much like Johnny’s clay this cream also contains hair nourishing ingredients such as: Jojoba and Avocado Oil to help smooth dry hair while adding shine, Pro Vitamin B to improve lustre and sheen while helping prevent hair damage.
Once again its Paraben free.
How to use it:
Johnny’s advise you to “Start with a 5pence sized amount. Ruffle through damp hair or slick with a comb”. Personally I like to use it on dry hair, that way I can control the style more.
Aqua(Water), Petrolatum, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Cetearyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Palmitate, Polysorbate 60, Propylene Glycol, PVP, Phenoxyethanol, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Sorbitan Stearate, Dimethicone, Parfum (Fragrance), Carbomer, Benzoic Acid, Panthenol, Dehydroacetic Acid, Disodium EDTA, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid.
We all need hairspray in our lives, for them days we just can’t be arsed. So we just swoosh around can of hairspray to give it some life. Or for when we want to complete our style with a hold that wont get ruined by the weather in the UK. We all need it.
I could say we all need some ‘Johnny’s FIX’ hairspray. This is now my all time go to hairspray. No nasty crispy hold, UK weather sustainable, almost looks like a cool can of WD40. What more could I ask for?
Hair stays in the style you want with long lasting results. Frizz control and humidity resistance perfect for them summer months. Plus its suitable for all hair types.
How to use it:
Shake the can. Holding upright, point and swoosh all around until completed style.
Alcohol denat., Butane, Isobutane, Propane, Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Aqua, Aminomethyl propanol, Panthenol, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Parfum.
Quite often its the same old story. When hair salons/barber shops decide to launch their own personal line of styling products they often turn out to be nothing to rave about; basic and cheap ingredients with a high selling price. Likely the reason you wont see them in your local boots store.
On this occasion I have been pleasantly surprised! All three products I have tested, do what they say they do and more. They all have hair nourishing ingredients to help improve hair whilst styling.
Brilliant packaging all round with an affordable price tag. I hope to try the rest of the range soon.
I would recommend Johnny’s Chop Shop products to anyone and everyone no matter your budget or style. Well done Johnny’s.
*P.S – 3 for 2 on all hair care at boot right now!
Cheerio for now,
